The squadron is part of the Air Cadet Organisation and is not a private gliding club. 625 VGS exists in order to promote and encourage an interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force amongst members of the Air Training Corps and the Combined Cadet Force.
In order to achieve this task we have a fleet of six Grob Viking T Mk1 conventional gliders, a winch, a towing tractor and a number of Land Rovers. The staff at the VGS is made up of volunteers who are either RAFVR(T) officers, Civilian Gliding Instructors or Flight Staff Cadets.
We operate all year round on every weekend, on Bank Holidays and on weekdays during continuous courses. We are predominantly tasked with teaching cadets how to fly, although Staff Continuation Training is an important part of our ongoing tasking.
We provide gliding to Dorset and Wiltshire Wing, Bristol and Gloucester Wing and West Mercian Wing.
